Keeping your Car Fine-Tuned During Lockdown

As we keep our cars parked for an extended period of time, we have to remember that it makes a big difference to the condition of the car once you decide to use it again. By adhering to the following tips suggested by Mitsubishi Motors Bangladesh you can ensure that your car stays in top condition during the ongoing shutdown due to COVID-19 health crisis. This way your car will be in optimum condition when you do take it out again.

Keep your Batteries Charged

Start your car once a week and let it run for about 20 minutes.  This will allow the battery to maintain charge during extended periods where it sits idle. Considering turning on the air conditioning, switching between hot and cold.

Keep the Tires in Check

Tires can deflate, develop flat spots and even crack when they aren’t moved. Re-park your car every few days, this will give tires a chance to rotate. Remember to check your tire pressure before driving the car again.

Inside the Insides Disinfected

Keep the inside of your car clean. It is important to maintain cleanliness to slow the spread of viruses like the current pandemic we have going on right now. Make sure you wipe the steering wheel, seats, door handles and controls down with a non-abrasive car cleaner or household equivalent. Also make sure to check it doesn’t damage the upholstery before spraying it all over the seats.

Keep it Parked and Covered

Try to park your car in a covered area to protect against the elements like bad weather and sun damage. Keep your car washed and clean. If possible use a protective wax to protect the paintwork from the elements. And if you have a cover, use it.

Check the Brakes!

Car brakes can seize up if they remain on for too long. The handbrake is especially prone to sticking. If you have a garage, move the car by trying to leave the handbrake off and using tire stoppers to keep the car from moving. While you’re running the engine, gently pump the brake pedal a few times to keep the brake pads free from the wheels.

Keep the Tanks Full

Having your tank filled means you can race off in times of emergency, and it also helps the engine stay lubricated. Over time the air above the fuel in an idle tank can condense and store moisture that can eventually lead to rust. We don’t recommend you go out just to fill up, but consider keeping your tank full to ensure it’s in the topmost condition.

Hybrid Car Maintenance

While marinating a hybrid or electric car that has not been driven for a while, there are a couple of extra things to keep in mind. These simple steps will allow you to keep your battery in working condition while not being used.

Always Keep a 30% Charge

Don’t keep your car plugged in for longer than necessary. Aim to keep the charge at around the 30% mark and keep it unplugged. This way you can charge to full capacity just before you need the car for a drive. EV batteries are better off if the charge is kept at 30% capacity. It is the best amount to keep the battery in optimal condition

12v battery on a hybrid or electric car will lose charge the same way it will on a regular car. Start your vehicle once a week and let it run for about 20 minutes. This will allow the battery to maintain charge during extended periods when it isn’t being driven.
